The "progressive movement" isn't just a monolith, I know. It's you and me. Working together (well, sometimes...)
So are we still committed to eradicating racism? I hope so. I don't care if you're for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. Backers of either candidate should be astute enough to recognize that the dividing line between the "two Americas" happens to separate by color more often than not.
So let's go back. We have a church that defines itself as "unashamedly black" in which the pastor preaches a Gospel that talks about a Jesus who speaks for the voiceless in his society. Who draws analogies from the Samaritan; the unclean woman; the blind man; connecting them to the marginalized in our society: Blacks; Japanese; gays.
Do we call for that pastor's head? Do we call him a racist and imply, by association, that his congregation is full of racists? Do we join the FOX News chorus?
Or do we recognize that he is leading a community aiming to define itself on its own terms? That too often, what is white is automatically set as what is normative - all the way to Jesus's skin color. Do we have anything to respect in the resolve of these people? Do we have anything in common with them?
I admire the Clintons for the antiracist initiatives they have participated in and led over the years. I ask that Hillary Clinton's supporters continue that legacy by showing respect for the Trinity church, as a manifestation of a community that is committed to eradicating racism. I'm not asking that you join the church. If you do not agree with Rev. Wright or Trinity, then I challenge you to find your own method of eradicating racism, in your own community.
That may be too much for some. At the very least, at the VERY least, I ask that your position on Rev. Wright be differentiable from Sean Hannity's. Thanks.
